2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Gets More Range, NACS Port, "Rugged" XRT Package

Several quality of life improvements make a great EV even better.

The 2025 Ioniq 5 brings some welcomed improvements over the previous model, including a bigger battery, native NACS charging port, and an all-new "adventure-ready" XRT package with rugged looks.

The biggest news is something we've been anticipating for a while, that new Hyundai vehicles will come with the Tesla-developed NACS port, granting access to over 17,000 Tesla Supercharger locations. Given the size and reliability of Tesla's network, that's a big deal. We've noticed that Hyundai has kept their charge port on the passenger side of the vehicle, which we suspect will cause some frustration as Tesla Supercharger cables are short, and mostly designed for driver-side ports. It's better than nothing, but expect some awkward glances with Tesla owners at the plug if you have to take up 2 spaces!

With this Ioniq you'll cover more ground between charges, with the battery increasing from 58 kWh to 63 kWh in the standard range models, and from 77.4 kWh to 84 kWh in the long range models. That gives the AWD cars up to 20 extra miles (depending on trim configuration) and the RWD cars 7-20 extra miles depending on trim, according to Hyundai estimates.

If you've ever looked longingly at a mild dirt track, the new Ioniq 5 XRT comes ready to explore less-than-perfect roads. The XRT gets 23mm of extra ground clearance, exclusive front and rear fascias with etched "digital camo" and a bunch of model-specific details that add up to a more rugged look. We don't think anyone will confuse this car with a serious off-roader, but if your summer cabin is down a poorly maintained dirt road this might be the way to go.

This new Ioniq 5 will also be the first Hyundai EV built in America, manufactured in their new "Metaplant" in Georgia. That means the car is expected to qualify for half of the federal tax credit when financed ($3,750) and will remain eligible for the full credit of $7,500 if leased.

In addition to these headline changes, he Ioniq 5 will get a bunch of smaller updates, including:

  • Restyled front and rear bumpers
  • New rear spoiler
  • New more aerodynamic wheels
  • Available flush-type roof side rails
  • New exterior colors including Atlas White Matte, Ecotronic Gray Matte, Celadon Gray Matte
